What is an OTT?
An Over-the-top media service (also known as over-the-top television, or simply OTT) refers to a media service offered directly to viewers via the public Internet, rather than through an over-the-air, cable, or satellite-based providers. The term is synonymous with “streaming platform”, and commercial examples could be Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video, which provide access to subscription-based film and television content.
OTT may include shows and movies for which the OTT acquired licensed rights from the content owner. Programming may also include original content produced by the service or specifically for it. Specific Over the top systems with no commercial goal in mind can be specialized in particular areas, like medicine, engineering, etc.
Over the top platforms are also usually able to host and distribute live streams (like YouTube does, for example).
Some frequent questions about OTTs:
- Is an OTT equivalent to an IPTV service? No. In the case of IPTV a managed network is used and all channels are constantly playing, so channel changes only need a fraction of a second before playing. OTT requieres to download a little bit of the media (streaming) to start playing.
- Can I integrate an OTT with other systems? Yes. In fact Videomed integrates witha third party Over the top provider to serve medical videos seamlessly over the Internet to authorized viewers.
- Can an OTT be used offline? This depends on the functionality the OTT creator has implemented in the platform, but it could provide more o less limited means to download content locally, albeit it temporally.
